Manchester City won in England against Real Madrid and qualified for the quarterfinals of the Champions League.
An epic Champions League night live this Wednesday, August 7th in England. Two giants met in the Etihad Stadium, and Real Madrid was going for the miracle. Also with the weight of being the biggest winner of the tournament. Manchester City sought to continue growing internationally and with the slogan of not stumbling again as in previous editions.
Zinedine Zidane vs Pep Guardiola, a duel of a heart attack on the benches, in the first until today undefeated in this competition with three titles obtained. The second won with Barcelona, but since then he has not managed to repeat the cup with other clubs. The English had the advantage of having triumphed on their visit to Spain.
However, if there is one thing Madrid has plenty of, it is history, and even though their captain Sergio Ramos did not play through suspension, the ‘citizens’ could not trust at all. And so it was. The home team went out to kill their opponents from the first minute with an inspired and indecipherable Sterling on the pitch and a De Bruyne showing why he is the best midfielder in the world.
In the eighth minute, the Spanish coach gave a mortal blow to the ‘merengues’ after taking advantage of a standard error in the exit of Raphael Varane. He was going to have a night to forget. Gabriel Jesus, who was squeezing the opposing defenders from the beginning, took the ball and touched it to Sterling, so that he could only push it and score 1-0.
The citizens’ team stopped the machine from that goal and tried to dominate the ball as they usually do. Madrid had no idea how to enter the rival area before a great defensive saga of Mancunian. So they were right to send shots. And it gave the result, because in the min. ’27, Rodrygo threw a centre from the right, and Benzema appeared to connect of head and to even the marker.
So they went into half-time, Madrid with a little hope and the City calmer, but not confident. The errors did not stop in extra time, as Casemiro got infect and lost the ball in midfield. But Sterling missed the opportunity and could not score.
With a Hazard absent, a Rodrygo throwing only crosses without much danger. And a Modric giving what little he has left, Benzema ‘threw the cart’ back and enabled his teammates and with long-distance shots. But, goalkeeper Ederson was always alert and responded correctly to any warning.
After half an hour of the second half, City failed to score the second goal. It raised doubts, as in several games he forgave and then suffered the consequences. However, at 68, Varane again made a mistake by giving a very short pass to Courtois. Gabriel Jesus showed his speed and peak the ball for the 2-1 win over Madrd.
The Brazilian’s goal was like a bullet for the Madrid team, who went on the attack for a few minutes, but little by little, they backed off and lowered their arms. Zizou’ made changes, but it was in vain because the locals had the match under control. That’s how the final whistle blew: Manchester won 2-1 against Real.
