The preliminary phase of the League of Legends World Championship begins in Berlin-Adlershof on Wednesday.
In the studio of game developer Riot Games, a total of twelve e-sport teams will fight for entry into the group phase of the World Cup, which will take place from 12th October in the Verti Music Hall.
The opening game will be played by the German-based team Unicorns of Love, which will compete against Clutch Gaming from North America. The four teams that make progress in the preliminary phase will then join the twelve teams that have already qualified for the World Cup groups in the regular season. One of them is Berlin-based G2 Esports, who is considered to be one of the favourites for the title. The team is coached by the German Fabian “GrabbZ” Lohmann.
The League of Legends World Championship, Worlds for short, is one of the most important events in the e-sport year. According to Riot Games, the final in South Korea last year was seen by 99.6 million spectators. In Berlin, only the preliminary and group phases of the World Cup will be held.
The teams will travel on to Madrid for the quarter-finals and semi-finals. The final will take place on 10th November in Paris. All matches will be broadcast on the streaming platform Twitch.
