Two days before his victory at the 24-hour race in Les Mans, Fernando Alonso also stopped by at the parallel eSports competition. The former Formula 1 world champion spoke out in favour of eSport and stressed the importance of further promoting the virtual scene.
Alonso has been active in eSport since November 2017. Back then, the Spaniard founded his SimRacing team, FA Racing, which is still in existence today. So it wasn’t too much of a surprise when he showed up at the eSports Series in Les Mans before his race. On-site, Alonso reiterated how he feels about virtual racing: “I have a lot of fun with eSport. There are countless possibilities in the virtual world, and you can see that these events generate more and more attention.” For him, it is clear that he will continue to be involved in this industry.
Stronger together
Alonso also spoke about the relationship between real and virtual racing. His wish would be: “In all races, as here in Les Mans, a virtual competition should take place in parallel”. Because: “Everyone gets something out of it.” The eSport appeals to new fans and creates another attraction, while the race itself draws attention to the virtual drivers.
Before Alonso left the stage, he also had a few tips for the drivers on site. Regardless of whether a simulation or on the right race track, in a 24-hour race, it would be important to maintain concentration and be physically optimally prepared. Eating a lot, drinking a lot and getting enough sleep is particularly important.
